NPTA weapons training is not just show for tournaments---effective self defense techniques are taught and practiced for each weapon. Therefore, it is recommended, although not required, that soft foam practice versions of each weapon also be purchased, to reduce the risk of injury while training with a partner. These foam weapons can also be helpful while learning new techniques, to reduce the risk of injury. Safety equipment is also recommended, especially in the beginning stages, and during sparring sessions. The weapons uniform is a red top, black pants, and your current Taekwondo belt. All recommended equipment can be purchased at the NPTA Pro Shop. You may shop online by clicking the link below, or you can visit the Pro Shop next time you're at the school. |
Weapons that can be classified as small blades include knives, stars, blowgun, and spikes. Knives, stars, and spikes can be thrown from varying distances, and knives can of course be used in close-range combat. A blowgun in the hands of an experienced practicioner can be deadly from surprising distances.
The Sai (3-pronged dagger) originated as an Okinawan farming implement, utilized in planting and harvesting. This tool would many times be attached to the end of a tenbin (bo staff), so that it could be easily used to work soil. The sai, generally used in pairs, was developed as a weapon by peasant farmers in need of defense against steel blades.
The Staff or Tenbin most likely originated as a simple pole held across the shoulders to transport buckets of grain or water. It was then developed as a weapon of self-defense by the farmers in need of protection.Staff instruction covers the use of the Bo (approx 6 ft), and Jo (approx 4 ft).
The nunchauku was a tool used in harvesting grain. Holding one stick, it would be swung back and forth from hip to hip, knocking the grain from the stalks, so it could be picked up from the ground. This tool could also double as a bit-and-bridle for horses. Popularized by Bruce Lee, this weapon can be effective in both long and short-range situations. It can be used to defend against knife and stick attacks, and to assist in throws, joint manipulations, and submission maneuvers.

NPTA sword training is a combination of the Japanese/Okinawan arts of Kendo and Kenjitsu. Training is done with either a shinai, (bamboo training sword used in Kendo) or a modern foam training sword.
The escrima. Also known as a Han-bo, or Kali stick, this 2 ft long stick (usually made of rattan) can be used singly, in pairs, or paired with a blade. Easily manueverable, this weapon can be used to strike with amazing speed and accuracy. The escrima can also be used as an effective grappling tool, and is extremely useful when applying joint locks or submission holds.
